Associate Professor of Ecology at the Polytechnic University of Marche (Italy, 2008-present). He has a 15-year experience in the study of linkages between benthic trophodynamics and the patterns of biodiversity in marine ecosystems, with a particular focus on the relationships between sediment biogeochemistry and the structure and functioning of the benthic microbial loop. Responses of biodiversity (with a special focus on meiofauna) to disturbance are investigated with emphasis on natural (eg, climate change and oceanographic forces) and anthropogenic (eg, organic pollution, eutrophication, bottom trawling) stressors in a variety of marine ecosystems including the Mediterranean Sea, the Antarctic ocean, and the deep regions of almost all world oceans. These studies are also framed in identifying tools for monitoring, management and protection of marine ecosystems, with particular attention to the thresholds of sustainability of human activities at sea. Vice President of the Italian Association of Limnology and Oceanography (AIOL) (2008-2009), he has participated to 4 Antarctic Expeditions and many oceanographic cruises, is Associate Editor of the international journal Chemistry and Ecology and member of the Editorial Board of the international journals Advances in Oceanography and Limnology (Taylor & Francis Group), ISRN Ecology and ISRN Oceanography. Author of about 90 peer reviewed articles, he scores a H of 22 and about 1500 citations.
